‘This supernatural soliciting cannot be ill, cannot be good’, so ponders Macbeth after being told by the weird sisters that he will be king. Nevertheless, urged on by his wife, he murders the king and seizes the crown. Pushing his uncertainties to one side, Macbeth embarks on a series of increasingly reckless and bloody acts which he believes are justified by the witches’ prophecies. His actions leave him isolated as the thanes who had once supported him march on his castle aided by their English allies. Yet Macbeth clings to the hope that ‘no man of woman born’ can harm him. Surely there is no way this prophesy can be denied?
