BACKFIRE Promotions created the unique in the UK...Race The Waves & Steampunk Weekend following an inaugural trial held in September 2018 as part of The Bridlington Weekend of Motoring.
This Retro-Style Motoring event draws on influences from the early 1900s Motoring Speed Events, which were held on the Yorkshire Coast Beaches & the Post War American Hot-Rodders. Retro-Style allows for the inclusion of much later constructions and especially custom builds. Period correct vehicles from the earlier years are most welcome but not in a stock form (unless produced for racing)
The beach element is supported by the organisers of the very successful Whitby Steampunk Weekend, who transform The Royal Hall within Bridlington’s Spa to a FREE to Enter Steampunk Emporium. Within there are the finest purveyors of Steampunk, Alternative, Lifestyle and Goth interests to delight our visitors. There is also Live Entertainment - Tearooms’ and Bars all interspersed with displays of Classic Motorcycles & Scooters. For stall info please email firstname.lastname@example.org
‘Race the Waves’ comprises a Retro theatre of auto-motion’ held on Bridlington’s South Shore beach featuring: vehicles running in pairs along the firm tidal Yorkshire sand from a ‘flagged start’. This element is supported by eclectic displays of American Customs, Rat-Rods, Hot-Rod Cars and Motorcycles placed along the elevated South Shore Promenade.
Thousands of people which included many Continental visitors, once again lined the Bridlington South foreshore over the two days in June 2019 to enjoy this unique in the UK Spectacle. The Race the Waves ethos is being inclusive and taking part, where everyone involved from the audience to the beach entrants gives of themselves to create an engaging atmosphere.
The BACKFIRE Promotions invitation to run vehicles along the Bridlington Sands is indeed a privilege and not bestowed lightly to those we wish to engage. The EY Events dept of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council have been most helpful and supportive by assisting with the event licensing, security, medical requirements and the use of Bridlington’s Spa.
Everyone who takes part in this motoring extravaganza are all winners. They have made the huge effort and contribution to be with us and the riders and drivers on the beach have to conquer a playing field which Mother Nature has served us for our torment, until she retrieves once more beneath her briny veil.
RULES are only few, in favour of a Respect and Gentlemanly conduct by all, which is paramount with all BACKFIRE Promotions events.
Race the Waves at Bridlington is indeed a phenomenon within the UK motoring calendar and our greatest wish is to encourage the next generation by offering youngsters’ a few runs on the Sunday for their ‘Tot-Rod’ vehicle’s. This element gives families the opportunity to encourage youngsters to be creative and take part.
Preference for inclusion will be offered to those who have actively constructed or adapted their vehicle.
Attire....Ladies and Gentlemen we value our event visuals and the resulting photography, therefore Retro Attire is of paramount importance for our beach engagement and our audience are actively encouraged towards a Retro dress code too.
