Bernardine Evaristo MBE is the award-winning author of eight books, most recently Girl, Woman, Other, which follows the lives of 12 predominantly female and black people in Britain aged from 19 to 93. Winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and a Sunday Times bestseller, the novel was selected by Barack Obama as one of his 19 Favourite Books of 2019.
Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University, Bernardine Evaristo has also produced numerous works of poetry, short fiction, essays, radio and theatre drama. Her writing and projects are based around her interest in the African diaspora.
Given in honour of JB Priestley (1894-1984), and in partnership with the Priestley family and the English and Creative Writing Department at the University of Huddersfield, this lecture is delivered by a leading writer of international renown, with a track record of making literature a vehicle for social and political comment.
