Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2021/22
Garry Walker leads a journey deep into the magic and menace of night with Britten’s haunting masterpiece based on six poems, Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
Inspired by a delirious, terrifying account of death in the Atlantic, Mark Anthony Turnage composed Drowned Out for a large orchestra and marked the score with the instruction ‘Very nasty’.
The season closes with one of the greatest English orchestral works; Elgar’s Enigma Variations, dedicated to several of his close acquaintances. Each variation portrays one of his friends, and in one case, a friend’s bulldog! The ninth variation, “Nimrod” is one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of classical music; frequently performed at solemn, national occasions, it often moves audiences to tears.
