All Hallows’ Eve falls annually on the 31 October. It is the day before All Saints’ Day in the Christian Calendar, which was also traditionally called All Hallows’ Day – with the word ‘hallowed’ meaning holy. Many of the celebrations we recognise from this time of year probably derive from earlier Celtic traditions around Samhain, the Gaelic word for the end of the summer.
