Held virtually for the first time in its history on Wednesday 2 December at 6.30pm, the 2020 Leeds Christmas Lights Switch-On will feature performances from global superstar John Newman, 80s legend John Parr, local brother pop rock band The Dunwells, Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists Class Dynamix, Leeds band Hyde Park Brass and Leeds born singe Chante Amour. Cbeebies presenter Alex Winters and Carriageworks Pantomime legend Jez Edwards will also be joining the festive extravaganza with a ‘12 day of Yorkshire Christmas’ sing-a-long together with an appearance from Santa himself.
Plus, local sporting heroes will be on hand to spread some motivational goodwill cheer with contributions from the Leeds United first team and ladies squads, IBF featherweight World Champion boxer Josh Warrington and some key video highlights and player messages from the newly crowned Challenge Cup winners Leeds Rhinos.
There will also be a recorded message from The Lord Mayor of Leeds together with this year’s Leeds Children’s Mayor Samuel Hill from Carr Manor Community School whose winning manifesto is based around the theme ‘Be yourself, love yourself and respect all others’.
The Leeds Lights Virtual Switch-on event will be free to watch on the Millennium Square YouTube channel and Facebook page on Wednesday, December 2 from 6.30pm, with the actual city centre lighting displays including a brand new installation on Briggate courtesy of Leeds BID switched on simultaneously with the online event.
A fabulous festive appeal has gone out to families, residents and communities all across Leeds calling on them to be part of the city’s first ever virtual Christmas lights switch-on. Leeds City Council is asking people to submit video clips and images of their Christmas light displays at home so they can feature in a dazzling digital montage that will be the climax of the exciting virtual Lights Switch-On.
