“Going to the Wars”
A Talk with Max Hastings
6th May 2020

Max Hastings is among Britain’s foremost writers and commentators about conflict. In his talk ‘Going to the Wars’, he will describe some of his own experiences on battlefields around the world, Vietnam and the Falklands prominent among them, and also what he has learnt from half a century of studying and recording the history of wars. Hastings is famous for his intimate human stories of men and women swept up in global strife, and he will share some of the most vivid with our audience at The Garden Rooms.
He says that whenever he writes about their experiences, he never forgets a line written in 1948 by a Norwegian Resistance hero, Knut Leer-Hansen: “although wars bring adventures that stir the heart, the true nature of war is composed of innumerable personal tragedies and sacrifices, wholly evil and not redeemed by glory”. Hastings’s talk for us will be illuminated, he says by many tales of both the adventures and the tragedies that befall men and women thrust into conflict.
