Overview & description
A walk through the history of mining in the Dales starting and finishing at Surrender Bridge above Healaugh in Swaledale. This will be a circular walk from Surrender Bridge into Gunnerside Gill, visiting the Lownathwaite and Blakethwaite mines. The route out is at a high level on the side of the valley giving us some unique views alng Swaledale. Then we return over the top of Friarfold Moor past Bunton Hush and North Rake Hush to the Old Gang Smelting Mill. From there it is an easy walk to the car park.
Meet for 9am and finish by 5pm. This is a walk on exposed moorland, so please come dressed and equipped correctly with food and drink for the duration. If you are not sure on what to wear or bring, please contact us.
Due to the distance and nature of the ground, we ask that only children 14 and over come on the walk.
