Description

Do bones intrigue you? Do you marvel at the way scientists and archaeologists can identify people from skeletons? Well why not join us for an exclusive, hands-on workshop with specialist and forensic anthropologist Dr Chris Aris.

This unique workshop is an opportunity for you to get up close and personal with real skeletal remains under the guidance of a professional forensic anthropologist. You will be introduced to how forensic scientists can identify individuals using only the skull. Under the direct tutelage of Dr Chris Aris, you will be taught the methods for differentiating male and female skulls using both real-life casts, and real skeletal material. From there, you will be shown how a forensic anthropologist can also produce a facial reconstruction using clay and what they have already identified from a skull. Using these skills you will then be challenged to reconstruct a human face yourself! The later sections of the workshop will also involve nuanced discussion about the practice of forensic anthropology and one-to-one time with Dr Chris for questions and demonstration. Attendees will also have the chance to take home the facial reconstructions they have made.

Dr Christopher Aris is an established specialist in human osteology, musculoskeletal anatomy, bioarchaeology, and forensic anthropology. He gained his PhD from the University of Kent, studying enamel growth patterns in human populations. Currently he works as a Teaching Associate in Anatomy and Osteology at the University of Sheffield, convening modules in musculoskeletal anatomy, forensic anatomy, and advanced osteology alongside directing the Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology MSc course. He is also currently a Forensic Anthropology Consultant within the University’s archaeological department.

The workshop takes place from 2pm-4.00pm and pre-booking is required. Tickets are £20.00 per adult, includes museum entry, hands-on workshop and the chance to take your creation.
