This exhibition, spread over all floors of the Water Street Gallery space in Todmorden and featuring works by almost 30 artists, invites us to explore the symbolic and mystical dimensions of our relationship with animals through time, as well as interrogating our contemporary attitudes towards them.
Including paintings, ceramics, sculptures, assemblages and even taxidermy, the works in ‘A Modern Bestiary’ draw on inspiration from the entire history of art. Key references include Medieval illuminated manuscripts and Gothic architecture and heraldry, as well as naive and folk art traditions and science fiction.
From majestic lionesses to characterful chimpanzees, ‘A Modern Bestiary’ features creatures great and small, all the way down to microscopic microorganisms that live in ponds and rivers. An intriguing and varied exhibition, it showcases local and international artists who are amateurs, professionals, and even veterinarians! Animal lovers and art appreciators alike will find something to spark their imagination.
