The George Inn, Upper Denby, a family run free house at the heart of village life, is the epitome of a traditional rural Yorkshire village pub.
The Wyatt family moved to Denby and reopened The George in 2008, quickly transforming it into the warm and welcoming pub that you'll find today.
Initially taking on a lease with Admiral Taverns who owned the property they spent the first few years building their reputation. Introducing Cask Ales and gaining Cask Marque Accreditation. In 2012 they successfully bought the freehold and began to invest in the long process of refurbishment whilst continuing to serve the village of Denby and its many visitors.
Since then The George has gone on to win several acclaimed CAMRA Awards for their Cask Ales. The Huddersfield & District Autumn Pub of The Season in 2013 and the coveted Rural Pub of The Year award in 2016. Four consecutive years in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2015 with an entry in the latest 2018 edition, and retaining the Cask Marque award for 9 years running, mean that quality is strived for and assured.
As well as their Real Ales there is a full selection of Lagers, Cider and Spirits, Fine Wines and a growing collection of Artisan Gins, with local and national producers all represented. A different Gin of The Month compliments the choice available and means there’s always something new to try!
And if you’re looking for a bite to eat then a homemade Pie is a must try! With eleven different fillings to choose from, the baking of the Pies at The George really is a labour of love as each one is individually hand made. Served with Mushy Peas and Gravy, with a bottle of Hendersons Relish never too far away!
The events calendar is always busy, with regular live music, monthly Jazz Nights, Folk Sings, the annual Denby Dash Cross Country Race and Charity Fundraisers. There are also guided Pie & Pea Walks throughout the year.
There is some amazing and beautiful Yorkshire countryside on the doorstep, with footpaths and bridleways heading out in all directions it doesn't take long until you're taking in breath-taking views or exploring tranquil glades.
Pie & Pea Walks are usually around four to five miles in length and are very relaxed affairs, heading off from The George on foot with a reward of Homemade Pie, Peas and Roast Potatoes waiting for you on your return.
Today the family continue to update the premises whilst staying true to the traditional village pub that The George has always been. With a homely feel, great atmosphere and an emphasis on quality they are now renowned for their award winning Real Ale and Fine Wines, a growing selection of Artisan Gin, delicious Homemade Pies and a very warm welcome.
