Alistair and Tom purchased Rafters Restaurant, Sheffield in November 2013 following a 2 year stint working together as manager and head chef at Rowley’s Restaurant and Bar in 2010, the pair went on to The Devonshire Arms in Middle Handley, Derbyshire, together and realised a shared dream by taking over Rafters Restaurant, one of the highest rated restaurants in Sheffield, in 2013.
A strong working partnership has seen the pair take the reigns of Rafters and in just three years is really making waves across the Sheffield dining scene! With head chef Tom’s modern British menu and Alistair’s front of house flair and wine knowledge, they’ve retained the 2 AA rosettes, achieved a Michelin Guide listing, scooped a 3/10 score in The Good Food Guide – the only restaurant in Sheffield to do so and very recently in 2015 Tom achieved success at The Caterer, under 30 Acorn Award winner.
Alistair went to Tapton School and completed a work placement at the Forte Post house and has been hooked on the catering industry ever since. Leaving school at 16 his career launched through a modern apprenticeship working in some of the best Hotels and Restaurants in Sheffield learning his trade.
Now with more than 15 years in the business at the age of 32 – Alistair Myers has done this and more since realising his childhood dream of owning his neighbourhood restaurant, Rafters with the added twist that Rafters was where he shared his first date with his wife – and just down the road from where they were both brought up!
For Tom at the age of 15, within an hour of leaving his last GCSE exam, Tom was changed into his chef whites ready to start his first professional chef job. And he’s never looked back.
At Sheffield City College, while studying for his Professional Chefs Diploma, he scooped both ‘Catering Apprentice of the Year’ and ‘Sheffield College Student Chef of the Year’, and helped prepare canapés for 350 people at a Masterchef of Great Britain dinner, going on to become a junior member of the Master Chefs of Great Britain 2010/11.
Chef de partie at the Michelin listed, 2 AA rosette Rowley’s Restaurant in Baslow, and sous chef turned head chef within the space of a year at the Michelin listed Devonshire Arms, Middle Handley, he scooped an Eat Sheffield ‘Young Chef of the Year’ in 2012 and Craft Guild of Chefs ‘Young Chef of the Year Award’ in 2014.
With a shared passion for food and service and a mission to give diners a truly memorable experience, this dynamic young team are putting Rafters firmly on the fine dining food map in Yorkshire serving exciting and creative dishes.
The future looks bright for Tom and Al at Rafters as their reputation grows along with a firm belief that with their shared drive and passion they will establish Rafters as an internationally renowned destination for food and drink.
