The following funding at Wakefield Council has been announced:

Cabinet set to approve funding to help get local people involved in district’s culture and heritage

When they meet next week, members of Wakefield Council’s Cabinet will be asked to accept £626,000 in funding for the district’s Museums & Castles service to help to get more local people involved in discovering their local heritage.

The Council has been awarded grant funding from the Arts Council England through their National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) programme.

This renewed investment by the NPO programme in the district’s Museums & Castles service is recognition of the ongoing work it does, and it’s track record of ensuring local communities have access to high quality culture.

The investment supports all areas of the Museums & Castles work – from exhibitions and events, to delivering services for young people and communities. It has supported the Council in the development of the district’s Museum and Castle sites and the way in which they’re able to work with communities across the district to showcase their heritage and local stories, reaching more communities, more schools and more families with more ambitious work.

The new round of NPO funding will support the ongoing development of this work and a continued focus on engaging new audiences in the district’s heritage.

The most significant project during this funding period will be the development and delivery of the new Library & Museum in Wakefield city centre. As part of this development, the current exhibition in Wakefield Museum, ‘Moving Stories’, invites visitors to take a peek behind the scenes and find out how an empty department store will be turned into an awe-inspiring new facility, as well as contribute their own local stories to be featured in the new museum.

Cllr Michael Graham, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: “We’re delighted that we are able to continue with the great work we’ve been doing over recent years. Alongside the £12m of Levelling Up funding for the new Library & Museum, this renewed investment by ACE will enable the Council to work with our communities and showcase the district’s many exciting stories across all our museum and castle sites.”

From April 2023 to April 2026 the Council will receive an annual grant of £208,772.

Members of Cabinet are meeting on Tuesday 21 March at 10.30am. The meeting can be watched live or later on the Council’s website.
