This summer, Wakefield Exchange (WX) is set to shine a light on the wonders of the universe with an exciting new exhibition titled Helios. Running from 12 June to 6 September, this event promises to be a spectacular celebration of the Sun, featuring a range of space-themed activities that will engage visitors of all ages.

Helios Artwork

Helios is a stunning touring artwork created by UK artist Luke Jerram. This impressive sculpture measures six metres in diameter and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the Sun up close. The artwork features intricate details of the Sun’s surface, and, remarkably, it is designed at an approximate scale of 1:230 million. This means that each centimetre of the sculpture represents a massive 2300km of the Sun's surface.

Looking directly at the Sun can be harmful to our eyes, but Helios provides a safe way to examine its extraordinary features, including sunspots, spicules, and filaments. This immersive experience is not just visually stunning; it also includes elements that explain solar phenomena, such as the solar flares that made the Northern Lights visible from the UK in May 2024.

Activities and Events

In addition to the Helios sculpture, WX will host a full programme of family-friendly, space-themed events throughout the summer. Visitors can look forward to:

  • Creative craft workshops

  • Dress-up sessions for children

  • Storytelling sessions inspired by space

  • Astronaut training days

There will also be special one-off events coinciding with the exhibition's schedule. These include:

  • Skate workshops and a Rainbow Roller Disco, where visitors can learn fun new skills

  • Yoga and sound bath sessions, allowing guests to relax under the soothing glow of Helios

With new activities and events planned each week, there will always be something fresh and exciting for everyone to enjoy.

According to Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport

“We’re looking forward to hosting a creative, thought-provoking, and immersive experience at WX.”

He added that it’s fantastic to welcome Luke Jerram back to Wakefield, especially after the success of his previous work, the Museum of the Moon.

Why It Matters

This exhibition is not only a chance to appreciate art and science but also an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the beauty of the universe. Helios aims to inspire curiosity about space and ignite a passion for learning in visitors of all ages. It encourages families to participate in hands-on activities that foster creativity and exploration.

As the days grow warmer and the nights become longer, Helios at WX offers a perfect summer outing. Whether it’s a family day out or a chance to meet friends, the combination of art, science, and fun activities makes it an event not to be missed. The exhibition provides a safe space for people to gather, learn, and enjoy the wonders of the cosmos.

For those interested in experiencing this unique celebration of the Sun, more information can be found on the Wakefield Exchange website. The event promises to be a highlight of the summer, making it a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors alike to come together and bask in the glow of Helios.
