Walk Description

The country park includes 500 acres of lakes and parkland, housing various sculptures as well as being the home of several endangered species. The fascinating Yorkshire Sculpture Park also sits within the park and is well worth exploring. The only one of its kind, the park is an international centre for modern and contemporary art, which receives thousands of visitors each year.

Also on the route is the interesting Elsecar Heritage Centre. Set in the conservation village of Elsecar, the centre is located within the former ironworks and colliery workshops of the Earl Fitzwilliam. Restored historical buildings now house an antique centre, individual craft workshops, and exhibitions of Elsecar’s past. In the village you can also visit Elsecar Reservoir and Canal.

Another major highlight is the delightful Cannon Hall Country Park. This country house museum is set in 70 acres of historic parkland and includes a collection of art including ceramics, glass, furniture and Old Master paintings, displayed in the hall’s Georgian and Victorian room.

You’ll also enjoy waterside sections along the beautiful Winscar Reservoir, Langsett Reservoir, Underbank Reservoir, Scout Dike, Royd Moor and Ingbirchworth Reservoirs.

The walk is waymarked with a green and yellow square.

  1. Pleae note – the permissive paths that run alongside the north side of the lakes at YSP have been withdrawn – the YSP entrance fee of £9 can be avoided by leaving the public bridleway (which runs through YSP) at the junction with the public footpath (grid ref: 278118), which runs in a ENE direction via Oxley Bank Woods and then to Jebb Lane at Haigh, where the Boundary Walk can be rejoined.
The route along the footpath can be difficult to navigate as the path is very poorly signed at present – from the bridleway, aim for a small gate in the fence and continue ENE to a track going through a gap between some trees. Continue along the edge of a field (field to right, line of trees / scrub on your left) to where the path bends rightwards to enter the wood.
