height: 400px;'><\/div>\n<a class=\"osmap_download\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/great-northern-railway-trail-1.gpx\" title=\"Right click and choose save-as if the direct click does not work.\" download>Download file for GPS<\/a>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/tidd.ly\/3TJ1FK6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get the OS App<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Walk_Description\"><\/span>Walk Description<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened in the 1860&#8217;s the route from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/bradford\/\">Bradford <\/a>to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/keighley\/\">Keighley <\/a>was known as the Switchback or Alpine route due to the large number of viaducts and tunnels that had to be build to navigate the geography of this part of Bradford. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This walk starts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/queensbury-west-yorkshire\/\">Queensbury <\/a>where you can see face to face the Queensbury tunnel, at just over a mile long, which is currently at the heart of a campaign to reopen as a walking route to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/halifax\/\">Halifax<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the fairly flat route towards Thornton and over it&#8217;s magnificent viaduct. The views down the valley to the city are simply beautiful. Look out for the school at the viaduct&#8217;s end, this is the site of the old station. Follow the signs to Wellshead tunnel where you&#8217;ll need to follow the route over the fields above the tunnels towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/denholme\/\">Denholme<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once there you&#8217;ll pick up the route again towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkshire.com\/cullingworth\/\">Cullingworth <\/a>to the even more stupendous Heweden viaduct. This 14 span structure is even more impressive due to it&#8217;s curve and views over the reservoir and Bronte moorland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The route continues for another mile into the lovely village of Cullingworth where you find a nice caf\u00e9 at the village hall for refuelling and a caffeine pick me up.
