|This autumn, York is set to come alive with an enchanting event that blends history, art, and a touch of the supernatural. Ghosts in the Gardens is returning for its sixth year, and this time, it promises to be bigger and better than ever. From Saturday, 19th September to Sunday, 1st November 2026, 70 ghostly sculptures will be scattered across the city, inviting both locals and visitors to explore York in a whole new way.
What to Expect from Ghosts in the Gardens
The Ghosts in the Gardens trail will feature a unique collection of 70 ethereal sculptures made from wire mesh. These ghostly figures will appear in various locations around York, including gardens, balconies, and along the historic city walls. Some of the sculptures will be in familiar spots, while others will pop up in surprising new places, adding an element of discovery for those familiar with the city.

Each sculpture tells a story, bringing to life fascinating figures from history. For instance, past characters have included a bear that once lived in the Museum Gardens menagerie and a Georgian stonemason inspired by Mary Anne Fisher, who has connections to Holy Trinity Church.
The Trail’s Growth and Popularity
Over the years, Ghosts in the Gardens has become a cherished part of York’s cultural calendar, attracting thousands of visitors and encouraging them to explore less-visited areas of the city.
According to Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID:
We know better than to try to keep York’s ghosts away, and this year, more of them than ever will use the city as their playground!”
With 70 ghosts appearing in 32 different locations, this year’s trail is completely free, allowing families and friends to make a day of hunting down all the ghostly figures or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll while keeping an eye out for them. It’s a fun and engaging way to rediscover York, especially for those who might think they know the city inside out. Just remember to look up, as some ghosts like to hang out in unexpected spots!
Locations of the Ghosts
The sculptures will be located at various iconic sites, including:
Museum Gardens
Clifford’s Tower
Barley Hall
York Castle Museum
Merchant Adventurers’ Hall
York Railway Station
These locations provide a beautiful backdrop for the ghostly figures, enhancing the experience for visitors as they wander through the historic streets of York.
Ghosts After Dark
As the sun sets, the excitement continues with a special event called Ghosts After Dark, taking place from 4th to 8th November 2026. During these five nights, all 70 ghosts will gather in York Museum Gardens for an atmospheric experience featuring live storytelling, light displays, smoke effects, and sound. This ticketed event will also include a brand-new night market and some surprises waiting to be discovered in the shadows.
Ghosts After Dark promises to be a magical experience for those who attend, allowing participants to immerse themselves fully in the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere of the gardens at night. Tickets for this unique event are already available and can be purchased at www.theyorkbid.com/ghosts-after-dark/.
A Celebration of Local Creativity
The Ghosts in the Gardens project is a testament to local creativity, with the sculptures designed by the York-based creative agency, Unconventional Design. Their work brings a playful yet respectful interpretation of York’s rich history, making it accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages.
As the event draws closer, more details about the new ghosts and their stories will be shared, providing even more reasons to look forward to this autumn’s festivities. Whether a lifelong resident of York or a first-time visitor, Ghosts in the Gardens offers a delightful opportunity to engage with the city’s history in a fun and interactive way.
With the event kicking off soon, it’s time to prepare for a season filled with ghostly adventures and historical explorations throughout York. Happy ghost hunting!
