Yorkshire Team
News • March 10th, 2026
|It sounds like something straight out of a sports film. A legendary team, once a powerhouse in its city, disappears for years, leaving fans with nothing but memories. Then, out of nowhere, a comeback is announced, powered by an unexpected international partnership. This isn't a Hollywood script, though. This is the real-life story of the New York Knights, a rugby league club making a sensational return to the pitch, thanks to a ground-breaking collaboration with one of British rugby's own, York RLFC.
A legendary team is back in the game
For more than five years, the New York Knights name has been quiet. But that’s all set to change. From 2026, the club is making its official return, re-entering the USARL competition. Think of it like a fan-favourite character returning for the new series of a TV show. But this isn't just a simple comeback; it's a revival with a huge twist. The team is joining forces with York RLFC, a major club from the British Betfred Super League. This is a pretty big deal. In fact, it's the first time a Super League organisation has ever formally teamed up with a club in the American domestic system. It’s about building a bridge across the Atlantic, connecting the heart of British rugby league with the growing passion for the game in the United States. This partnership is a massive opportunity for the growth of the sport on an international scale.
The dream team leading the charge
A comeback story needs a brilliant team behind the scenes, and this revival has exactly that. Leading the project is Head Coach Matt Duckworth, a name that will be familiar to York fans as he’s a former York RLFC player. Matt has been living in the United States since 2012, so he understands both sides of this unique partnership. He's known for being an excellent coach, especially when it comes to spotting athletes from other sports and turning them into rugby league stars. Working with him is George Reiss, who will be the General Manager and a Player/Coach. Together, Matt and George are focused on building something that lasts. They know success won't happen overnight.
As Duckworth explained, it’s about a careful, step-by-step process.
“I’ve been in the United States since 2012 but have remained heavily involved in the game and carry enormous passion for it. I’ve also had the privilege of playing with and working alongside George. We know this is going to take time and we’re comfortable with the organic growth timeline required.”
“Our priority is building a true home for the Knights here in New York. That starts with earning player buy-in, creating standards, and building the right culture from day one. We also need to create strategic partnerships with local sponsors to sustain the level of growth required.”
“Ultimately, we want to give more Americans the opportunity to experience rugby league on the world stage once they have the solid foundation we are committed to building here in New York. This partnership with York RLFC will grow into a true transatlantic pathway, reaching the wider rugby league audience globally — because if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.”
George Reiss is just as excited about the new venture.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward in reviving an iconic brand and expanding the reach and profile of rugby league. Working alongside such passionate and experienced individuals and organisations is a tremendous opportunity, and I am incredibly excited about what we can build together. The reintroduction of the New York Knights is about more than just a team. It’s about reconnecting fans, growing the game, and creating a strong foundation for long-term success.”
More than just a league, it's a global opportunity
This revival has sent waves of excitement through the rugby league community on both sides of the pond. Chris Martin, a board member for the USARL and a former player for the original New York Knights, sees this as a game-changer.
“York RLFC’s involvement brings professionalism and stability that American rugby league has needed for years. It strengthens the entire pathway for players and coaches. I played for the original New York Knights for many years, so to see the Knights back and competing again means a great deal to me personally. We are incredibly proud and happy to welcome them back into the competition, and we believe their return is an important moment for rugby league in the United States.”
For York RLFC Chairman Clint Goodchild, the decision was about honouring history while looking to the future. He acknowledges the huge legacy of the New York Knights and sees this as a chance to build on it.
“The New York Knights hold a special place in US rugby league history. This revival honours that legacy while building genuine opportunities for American athletes and increasing the growth of the game in the US. While we are the new kids on the block in the Super League, we believe that Rugby League truly is The Greatest Game of All and it belongs in one of the greatest cities of all. We are under no illusions that it will be a ground up building process for the New York Knights, but we are excited to support and guide it to success on and off the field.”
“In years to come we will be looking at opportunities to take a Super League game to New York and continue to grow the following of the sport in North America.”
This entire partnership shows a serious commitment to making rugby league a truly global game.
What's next for the New York Knights?
So, the comeback is on! Announced on March 9, 2026, the revival is just getting started. In the coming months, the club will be holding an open combine, which is basically a massive try-out for any player who thinks they have what it takes to join the new roster. There will also be announcements about new sponsors, player signings, and the reveal of the official team kit. It’s not just about the new, though. The club plans to hold events to bring together past players, supporters, and officials to celebrate the team's incredible history and its exciting future. For fans of rugby league, this is a story to watch. The return of the New York Knights, powered by the spirit of York, is set to be one of the most exciting chapters in the sport's recent history.
