A Veggie Valentine’s

in Leeds in North Yorkshire in Sheffield in Wakefield in York

Picking a venue for your Valentine’s date can be stressful, especially if you want to find somewhere that serves vegetarian food. However, Yorkshire has a wealth of options for Veggie Valentine’s. The region of Yorkshire caters for everyone – from fully vegan couples, people with veggie partners or singles trying to impress on a first date. Read on to see our recommendations for veggie Valentine’s day this year…

Döner Summer

With outlets in Huddersfield, Hull, York, Leeds and Sheffield, there’s always a Döner Summer nearby. The chain serves vegan fried chicken, kebabs, burgers and loaded chips. In our opinion, it’s the best option for a vegan or veggie Valentine’s. Try the Chick’n Parm Teller if you love cheese or the Garlic Chick’n if you like some heat. Why not wash it down with one of their cocktails? The cocktails combine pudding and drink in one as they are topped with treats like candy floss.

Bundobust

The sister of award-winning Indian restaurant, Prashad, Bundobust is a more chilled version of the amazing venue. They serve vegetarian Indian style tapas accompanied with custom beers from Thornbridge brewery. This is a great place to take a first date as you can try loads of different food in the relaxed atmosphere. Our favourites include the Vada Pav, an Indian take on a classic chip butty and Raghda Pethis, where ‘the North of England meets India’.

Prashad

We can’t mention Bundobust without talking about Prashad. The predecessor of Bundobust is an upscale venue to really treat your partner. Just outside Bradford, the restaurant offers authentic North West Indian food inspired by an inherited love of food. Chef Minjal creates delicious meals which put his twist on classic Indian dishes.

Dishi

If you love Asian food, check out Dishi in Sheffield. Their 7 course taster menu allows you to try seasonal ingredients inspired by Asia with five savoury and two sweet dishes. The 100% vegan venue is run by a husband and wife team in a small, cosy building just outside Kelham Island and makes for the perfect venue for a first date or long term couples alike. The taster menu is usually served on a Saturday, so make sure to book ahead.

Corarima

Corarima holds the top spot as Happy Cow’s highest rated restaurant in Yorkshire. Not only is it fully veggie but also gluten and sugar free. They offer typical Ethiopian food, like stews, salads and pancakes. Try something new with Injera pancakes instead of cutlery and traditional Ethiopian coffee, which often features in traditional coffee ceremonies. The restaurant is great for lovers of warm, spicy, smoky dishes nestled in the heart of Wakefield.

The Orchid

This vegan Chinese venue in York offers an extensive menu featuring mock meats, spring rolls, dumplings, noodles, rice and more. Although the restaurant is mainly inspired by Chinese cuisine, they also serve Japanese and Thai cuisine. But if your partner is extra fussy they offer dishes such as vegan calamari, vegan chicken nuggets and ‘lamb’ skewers. Just off Micklegate, this is a great option for a night out in central York, as it is surrounded by many of the city’s best bars.

Orinoco

Also found in York, Orinoco offers some of the best vegan junk food on offer in Yorkshire. Check out their house burgers, salads, vegan fried chicken and tofu dishes. If your brave, accompany your chips with the Marmite and Biscoff sauce. If that wasn’t enough to convince you that Orinoco is the best place to indulge yourself, their cakes and buns will, with cupcakes topped with mini doughnuts and three tiered victoria sponge.

JJ’S Vish and Chips

If picking up a chippy tea and snuggling down to watch a rom com sounds like your kind of v-day, check out JJ’s. The veggie fish and chip shop serves banana blossom, fritters and bratwurst with the option of halloumi and cheesy chips for the veggies. Their shop is located on Kirkstall Road but if you just want to sit back and relax, you can order their food from Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Mango

North Yorkshire folk are in luck that you can find one of the best veggie Indian venues in Wetherby. It’s easy to see why the restaurant was featured in the 2020 Good Food Guide when you see the menu. It’s full of award-winning, authentic Indian dishes like their methi malai kofta. The fenugreek and vegetables koftas are cooked in a tomato gravy and topped with fresh cream and remain a chef favourite.

Piña

This Mexician restaurant is a great option if your partner is not veggie as they serve meat and veggie burritos, tacos and more. We love their cocktails, featuring traditional mezcal and tequila, it’s worth the extra pennies to get the full gringo-in-Yorkshire experience.
