Partridge Lodge is perfect for families or friends, this impressive five-bedroom base combines high-spec interiors with lots of outdoor space

Six miles east of this stunning holiday home begins the North York Moors, full of heather-studded plateaux, woods and high sea cliffs. Venture ten miles west, meanwhile, and you’ll already be in the Yorkshire Dales, where dry-stone walls dot gentler valleys. In other words, this is an extremely well-placed home.

You’ll find it in the charming, riverside village of Newby Wiske, only a short hop from the A1(M) road yet wonderfully quiet. A beautiful, newly-developed home on the owners’ family plot, Partridge Lodge works just as well for multi-generational families as large groups of friends.

Those owners have been meticulous in every detail of this delightful red-brick base. The design sees soothing shades – soft white walls, wooden furniture and eye-catching feature wallpaper – accentuate a homely element instilled by stylish gallery walls, squashy sofas, rich velvet cushions and bright patterned lampshades.

Its heart is an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space whose large, bi-fold doors allow the morning light to flood in. These lead to a flagstone terrace ready for al-fresco group dining on warm days. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue after a competitive croquet game on the lawn. Large, enclosed expanses of grass both to the property’s rear and front also offer the chance to sit, sunbathe, read or practise yoga.

Looking for the kids? They’ll probably be in Partridge Lodge’s purpose-built, stand-alone games room. This comes furnished with pool and foosball tables, plus comfy seating for card or board games. Connecting onto the garden, it’s a great, separate space for older children to use, away from those boring adults, or for groups of chums seeking some solitude.

Speaking of which, there are two delightful, adjacent sitting areas in order to satisfy all guests’ fancy. Both have a trio of slumberous sofas. As popcorn-powered movie nights take place in one, off the dining area, quieter chats or group games might be unfolding amid the second room, heated by an electric fire if necessary.

The ground floor further features one twin room, ideal for any guests of limited mobility. Four more spacious bedrooms await just upstairs. That includes the massive master suite, whose en suite contains a large walk-in shower, plus the second bedroom, also en-suite, and its king-size bed. Another two sleeping quarters – a super-king double and a twin – share the family bathroom.

Both within half an hour’s drive, the Dales and Moors offer a plethora of walking and cycling routes for all levels. Those include journeys to such famous landmarks as Aysgarth Falls, Malham Cove or Rievaulx Abbey. Harrogate, famous for its tea rooms and Victorian bath-house is within easy reach, as are numerous golf courses and Ripon’s prestigious, year-round horse races.

LOCATION

There is a network of stunning footpaths on the doorstep. One route winds alongside the River Cover from Coverdale. Head to the historic stepping stones and further up-river to the Hallo Bridge, then loop back via East Witton to call by the famous Blue Lion dining pub, or closer to home at the iconic Cover Bridge Inn.

A short ten minute drive away is Thirsk which centres around a bustling cobbled market square, dominated by the town clock, where Monday and Saturday markets accompany independent shopping. Visitors from all over the world also enjoy a number of flat, short walks through the town and along its river towards small, pretty villages with sandstone cottages. More strenuous hikes can be found on the Hambleton Hills via moorland tracks such as The Drove Road. Or there’s the long-distance Swale Way path, connecting Thirsk with Boroughbridge and Kirby Stephen.

With its charming, cobbled streets, hidden gems and a central marketplace full of unusual shops, Bedale is well worth a visit! Those unique stores sell everything from jewellery and antiques to custom-made furniture, women’s fashion, china or gifts. Foodies, in particular, are well catered for. Wensleydale cheese is, of course, a local speciality, as are real dairy ice cream from Dales herds and local Yorkshire beers. The town’s butcher’s is locally renowned.

Clinging to the hillside, Staithes is unmissable and a great day out for the family at under an hour from Partridge Lodge. From its winding cobbled streets to charming 18th-century cottages, you’ll find this coastal village full of character. Once one of the largest fishing ports in the Northeast, this hillside gem is now a treasured base for those exploring Yorkshire’s clifftop paths or discovering the delights of rock-pooling and fossil hunting on its small, sandy beach.

ACTIVITIES

Within a short drive of the edge of the National Park, Partridge Lodge is perfectly placed for guests to enjoy the North York Moors one of Britain’s most extraordinary places. From rolling moorland to rugged coasts and forests to enchanting dales it has everything and more. Walkers have it made, with anything from a 1-mile easy access stroll to the 109 miles of the Cleveland Way National Trail which has tumbling waterfalls, character-filled villages, coastal bays, moorland crags and historic monuments.

The North York Moors National Park is home to some of the darkest skies in the UK and every February the Dark Skies Festival celebrates all things celestial. The North York Moors National Park was designated an International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association, one of only 18 in the world. So, officially one of the best places in the country to see stars!

A short drive away is Sutton Bank which is known far and wide as being one of the world’s leading places of natural beauty. This incredible landscape provides an amazing vista over Hood Hill, Gormire Lake and Vale of Mowbray. It’s a great family day out, with thrilling walks and cycle rides crossing the whole area.

Explore the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales just 15 minutes drive from Partridge Lodge with mile upon mile of sheep-dotted heather moorland and lush valleys punctuated by charming villages and market towns. The rolling hills and wandering dales of this celebrated living landscape include the two protected areas of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The beauty of our history can be seen at the nearby Helmsley Castle and there is a stunning, scenic walk from the castle to Rievaulx Terrace, which is one of Yorkshire’s finest 18th-century landscape gardens, containing two temples, and with its stunning views down over the Cistercian ruin of Rievaulx Abbey. In spring the bank between the temples is awash with wild flowers, in summer the lawns are the perfect spot for picnics, while in autumn the beech woods are a mass of rich hues.

Children of all ages will love Lightwater Valley, a fun-packed adventure park for all the family offering numerous rides and attractions ranging from traditional funfair style carousels to exhilarating flying swings and a rollercoaster. Also, enjoy the ‘Tree Top Trails’ woodland canopy, with trampolines and net slides above the park, as well as ‘Discovery Woods’, offering interactive fun bringing the kids close to nature with a mud kitchen, bug hotel and pond-dipping activities.

The area hosts a number of events throughout the year including prestigious horse racing fixtures at Thirsk, York, Ripon and Catterick racecourses which are all within an hour’s drive of Moor View Lodge.

Golfers certainly won’t be disappointed by the options nearby. Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Course, Aldwark Manor and Easingwold all offer challenging 18-hole courses within lovely scenic settings.
