Richmond, North Yorkshire celebrates 950th Anniversary
History and records show that the building of the famous Norman castle that stands tall and proud in the centre of Richmond, North Yorkshire commenced in 1071. The town has since grown up and around the castle and under its protection. The views from the top of the town and beyond into the Yorkshire Dales are very special indeed.
This year, 2021, Richmond Castle and town are celebrating their 950th birthday – a very special BIG birthday! With the support of Richmondshire District Council, Richmond Town Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Richmond Civic Society, The Castle Studies trust, Richmond Rotary Club, Richmond Castle members of the Original Richmond Business and Tourism Association. The castle and town are set for a year of celebration to mark this very special occasion.
Over the town and local area local organisations are embracing these celebrations and many are adapting their annual events to fit in with the theme. Special events exclusively for the year are also being arranged. Other organisations are still welcome to join in and plan their own events.
