Description

The Wensleydale Railway is an authentic heritage railway serving the local community, offering tourists, families and transport enthusiasts a great value day out in the Yorkshire Dales with lots to see and do along the way. The starting point of the railway has traditionally been Leeming Bar with visitors travelling up to Redmire on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, passing through the Georgian market town of Bedale and the Dales market town of Leyburn, with constantly changing scenery, from the arable lands of the Vale of Mowbray in the East, to the hills of the Yorkshire Dales in the West.

Start your journey at Bedale station which is nestled a short distance away from the main high street and has served the bustling market town for well over 150 years. From here you will travel Eastwards to Scruton where you will be greeted by our friendly Edwardian interpreters who will show you around the beautifully restored and mutli-award winning station building set at the turn of the 20th century, including the vegetable patches and piggery in the back garden. You can also spend some time visiting the “Thankful Village” of Scruton itself which is a delight, enjoy lunch in The Coore Arms, visit the playpark or perhaps take one of our suggested walks through farmland and on peaceful roads.

On your return journey, make sure to alight the train at Leeming Bar and see the extent of the restoration work carried out on the beautiful Victorian station house which has been the beneficiary of much attention and National Lottery Heritage Fund money in the last two years. See how plans are evolving and how history is being brought back to life, this time we are in the glorious 1920’s. The Station Master is ready to show you proudly around his station which features a parcels office, ticket office, ladies waiting room, parlour, kitchen and washroom. There is both a souvenir shop and buffet on site and you could also spend some time in the village itself which features two pubs (The Corner House and The Reubens), a play park, W Braithwaite & Sons Garden Centre and Simply Dutch.

Heritage Programme

We are looking forward to relaunching our award-winning heritage and education programme at the beautifully restored Victorian station at Scruton near Bedale.
