Overview

Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal 5 images

Set within the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, this World Heritage Site offers a great day out for all the family. Hidden within the Skell valley, you’ll find the magnificent ruins of a once great Abbey and a Georgian pleasure ground to delight your senses. This breathtaking landscape is also home to a Jacobean Manor House, Medieval Deer Park, Victorian church and Cistercian mill.

There’s so much to see and do whether you have just a few hours or a whole day. Discover how the Abbey and Water Garden estates were brought together by the visionary Aislabie family. Explore the hidden passages and corners of the abbey; the largest monastic ruins in the country. Wander through the tranquil Water Gardens amongst the classical statues, follies and ponds. Enjoy the stunning surprise view as you climb up the high ride and dare yourself to pass through the Serpentine Tunnel.

Get closer to nature and spot some of the animals and plants that live on the estate including Red, Fallow and Sika deer, pheasants, swans, bats and ancient trees.

Let off steam in the children’s play area and stretch your legs in over 800 acres of parkland and gardens.

Pick up an audio guide (£2), call into the Porter’s Lodge exhibition, or join a tour to find out more about the turbulent history of this fascinating place.

Find the perfect spot for a picnic or indulge in some delicious home-made treats from the restaurant and tearooms.

Open daily throughout the year, each season brings something new to uncover. From trails and wildlife walks to re-enactment weekends and outdoor theatre, you’ll find a wide range of events and activities to enjoy. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk/fountainsabbey to see the full programme.
