Description

Step into a world of mystery at Wakefield Museum to discover stories of people and their lives, some over a thousand years in the making, others only just beginning.

Discover the extraordinary, the oldest, the first, and the one and only in the Welcome to Wakefield display. See our local cultural treasures and learn surprising facts about the city. Explore the history of Wakefield in the Main Gallery and hear stories of wealth and power, hardship and hope, love and war, and passion and belief through the eyes of the people involved in shaping the city.

Explore the extraordinary world of Charles Waterton, pioneering Victorian eco-warrior, explorer and creator of the world’s first nature reserve. Meet some of the animals he preserved and some that he created. Are you brave enough to stand on top of the ferocious caiman crocodile that he so famously captured on one of his trips to South America?

The Museum’s Special Exhibition Gallery plays host to a changing programme of fascinating temporary exhibitions. Previous exhibitions include Quentin Blake: The Roald Dahl Centenary Portraits, a series of new portraits of some of Roald Dahl’s most beloved characters and Gateway to Eternity: Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt,  a recreated Ancient Egyptian tomb housing the 2,500-year-old mummy of Perenbast, a temple singer. What will you discover during your visit?

Imagine life as a nineteenth century prisoner in Wakefield Jail, discover the area’s rugby heritage, hear the strange crackle that forced rhubarb makes when growing, learn the hardships of war throughout the ages and relive the stories of people who have worked, lived and played in the city.

Wakefield Museum is located on the lower level of Wakefield One building in the heart of Wakefield. The Free City Bus stops just outside and Westgate Railway Station is only a two minute walk away.

Wakefield Museum is part of Visit Britain’s “We’re Good to Go” Covid-secure initiative.
