Yorkshire’s Castles

There’s a wide variety of impressive historical treasures to see around the beautiful county of Yorkshire, all of which have tales of vivid history to tell. Providing a wealth of heritage combined with opportunities to wander around the magnificent grounds, there’s a chance to sense how lives were led hundreds of years ago by visiting the county’s most spectacular castles.

With its stunning location and panoramic views over the dramatic Yorkshire coastline, Scarborough Castle is not to be missed. With over 2,500 years of turbulent history behind it, the castle defends a prominent headland between two bays and incredible views.

Guardian of the gateway to the Yorkshire dales for over 900 years, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval castles in England. The enchanting early-Tudor courtyard and stout gatehouse towers hint at the splendour revealed as visitors enter the grounds.

Conisbrough Castle has a 90ft-high great white circular keep with six buttresses. It was constructed in 1180AD, making it the oldest surviving castle of its type in England. From the top of the keep are some of the most spectacular views of the local area.

Sitting high above the River Swale, Richmond Castle is one of the oldest Norman stone fortresses in Britain. In the 1170’s Henry II added the towering keep which is over 30 metres (100 feet) high and still remarkably complete inside. From the roof, visitors can enjoy breath-taking views of the cluster of houses in the pretty market town of Richmond.
