History Of Bolton Castle

Dating back to the 14th century, Bolton Castle is a formidable stronghold rich in tales of royalty, intrigue, and resilience. Constructed by Sir Richard le Scrope, the castle’s sturdy walls have witnessed centuries of tumultuous events, including the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, during the 16th century.

Sustainable Tourism

Beyond its historical significance, Bolton Castle is leading the charge in sustainable tourism. Under the guidance of Jacqui Naylor, the castle’s General Manager, efforts are underway to reduce energy consumption, conserve water, and promote eco-friendly waste management. These initiatives not only preserve the castle’s natural surroundings but also pave the way for a greener future.

Jason Hanslip, Head Gardener, is delighted with the Bronze Award:

“We make every effort to retain our green ethos with what we grow and use from the garden as well as in our garden practices, but the Bronze Award shows we are on the right track to achieve the Silver and hopefully the Gold Award. Our visitors are an integral part of this process and we look forward to welcoming them to the castle and gardens, showing them how going green can benefit them and enhance their visit. It’s an award about which we are very proud.”
