The museum galleries, café and gift shop are temporarily closed for a £4m refurbishment. Our plans include brand new and updated exhibitions and improved facilities. During this temporary closure we’ll be heading out on the road in our Emergency Museum, delivering fun activities at a festival near you – watch this space for further updates. During this temporary closure, the museum conference centre and pay and display car park remain open as normal.
The best way to keep up to date with all our news is to join our mailing list or keep an eye on social media.
The project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Wellcome Trust, Thackray Medical Research Trust, Wolfson Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Foyle Foundation, Leeds Inspired part of Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity and others.
The Thackray Medical Museum is a completely unique visitor attraction. This beautiful 150 year old grade 2 listed building was formerly the Leeds Union Workhouse. With nine interactive galleries, the fascinating exhibitions and collections tell a story that affects us all.
Hear and smell what it was like to walk the grimy streets of Victorian Leeds, find out what it was like to undergo an operation without anaesthetic and explore your body in our jaw-dropping Life Zone gallery. Discover how medicine past and present is changing your future. With regular events and family activities we offer fun and interest for all ages.
