Festival of Yorkshire - Scarborough

A Festival of Yorkshire - Scarborough

Location: Scarborough
Every year since 1975 on 1 August our region celebrates Yorkshire Day. It’s a day to celebrate our proud and rich heritage as ‘Yorkshire Folk’, a day when we can reflect on the beauty of our region’s natural landscapes and coastline, the quirkiness of our dialect and the diversity of our people.

Yorkshire has so much to offer and for that reason when we found out that Scarborough was to be the official host town for the 2012 Yorkshire Day | celebrations we knew that one day simply would not be enough.

For the first time ever, to coincide with Yorkshire Day, Scarborough is proud to host ‘A Festival of Yorkshire – Scarborough’, a five-day Festival that will | celebrate all aspects of life in God’s Own County. We wanted the Festival to be as diverse as possible and to showcase many different aspects of | Yorkshire life and talent. With Festival events and activities centring around arts, music, cuisine, industry, literature, history and past times, you name it we have it covered in the Festival. We would like to think we have provided 'something for everyone’.

The main attraction of the Festival will be an open exhibition of one of the world’s most famous living artists, Yorkshire’s own David Hockney at Woodend. The exhibition will showcase prints and etchings from Hockney’s world famous Blue Guitar and Brothers Grimm series and admission will be free of charge. We are also proud to welcome the return of Scarborough Sings Together at the Spa, a Yorkshire ‘Last Night of the Proms’ style event that will bring together a diverse selection of choirs and vocal group to perform traditional Yorkshire songs and anthems.

‘A Festival of Yorkshire – Scarborough’ takes place across a number of venues in Scarborough as well as other parts of the Borough including Filey and Wykeham. Whether you are joining us for just a day or for the whole five day Festival, we hope you enjoy your visit.
