Yorkshire’s Spring Awakening

in Barnsley in East Yorkshire in Scarborough in Sheffield in York

Spring Equinox has arrived, bringing with it earlier dawns and later sunsets as daylight hours increase. Yorkshire is experiencing a spring awakening with flowers blooming, venues reopening and longer hours allowing for more time outdoors. So how will you enjoy this time? We have a few suggestions of course…

  1. Visit a farm

Farms are always an experiential and educational family day out, but spring offers a particularly exciting time to visit since it’s lambing season and time for spring blooms. You’re spoilt for choice with farms in Yorkshire so here’s a small selection.

As the winter frost passes, spring blooms start to spring, creating a carpet of joy across Yorkshire. Some of the most popular flora at this time of year are snowdrops, tulips and of course blossom trees. Perhaps none as affiliated with the season as daffodils, though.

Farndale in the North York Moors National Park is famous for Daffodil Valley, a spectacle of wild daffodils thought to have been originally planted by the medieval monks at nearby Rievaulx Abbey. Quintessentially spring.

  1. Hit the high street

Whether you’re shopping for season appropriate clothes, want to soak up arts and culture or looking for a tasty meal out, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for on the high street.

In the Bradford district from 12 to 27th March it’s Spring Back – expect creative street art, colourful independent markets and microbrewery beer festivals – not to be missed.

  1. Taste spring

Discover the best seasonal produce at the regions markets and restaurants! Or – better still – visit a producer to see the quality for yourself.

At Ampleforth Abbey – a working monastery with one of the largest orchards in the North – you’ll be amazed by the stunning apple blossom trees which produce hand-crafted liqueurs and cider.

  1. Spot the wildlife

Keep your eye out for wildlife making an appearance to enjoy spring in Yorkshire, particularly migrant birds such as the iconic puffins who have already been spotted in East Yorkshire at RSPB Bempton Cliffs.

  1. Step into the season

With longer days and milder weather, if you’ve been retreating indoors, now’s the time to get outdoors. Why not try Sheffield, the Outdoor City! Here’s a short 2 mile ramble just 6 miles from the city centre in the gorgeous Peak District National Park.

  1. Attend events

During spring there’s plenty going on at venues throughout Yorkshire, including the National Lottery Open week from 19 to 27th March. To celebrate the money raised for good causes, anyone with a valid National Lottery ticket, Scratchcard or Instant Win games can enjoy exclusive offers at Lottery-funded venues and attractions.
