What Are The Refurbished Wensleydale Railway Carriages Like For Christmas In Yorkshire?

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on November 17th, 2025

There is something a bit special about a steam train at Christmas. The chuffing engine, the plume of steam in the cold air, it is a proper festive scene. If you are planning a trip on a heritage railway this year, you are in for a treat, especially in North Yorkshire. The Wensleydale Railway has spent the past few months giving several of its classic carriages a major refurbishment, and they are ready just in time for the busy Christmas season. It is a story of old school engineering meeting modern comfort, brought to life by a dedicated team.

Wensleydale Railway

A Bit Of TLC For Some Old Timers

These carriages are not just any old train cars. They are three former British Rail Mk.2 carriages, important pieces of railway history. Built between 1964 and 1975, they have travelled thousands of miles and served millions of passengers. After decades of service, they were definitely showing their age, so the Wensleydale Railway team decided it was time for a full overhaul. A small team of paid staff and committed volunteers stepped in, spending just over three months bringing the carriages back to life. This work means they are not only ready for Christmas but will continue running for many years to come. This is what heritage railways are all about.

More Than Just A New Coat Of Paint

When people hear the word refurbishment, they often think of a quick repaint. This project went far deeper. Yes, the exteriors received significant repairs and a smart new look, but the team's main focus was on the interiors. They examined everything that affects the customer experience and upgraded it.

Here is what they improved:

  • Lighting: Old, dull bulbs were replaced with modern energy efficient LEDs, creating a brighter and more welcoming atmosphere.
  • Power: Completely new batteries were installed to keep everything running smoothly.
  • Seating: This was the biggest job. The seats were completely transformed for comfort and accessibility.

The project was a full scale modernisation of historic locomotive hauled coaching stock, carried out with respect for the heritage of the carriages.

Getting Comfy For The Journey

An uncomfortable seat can ruin even the most scenic trip, so the team put huge effort into this part of the refurbishment. The old seat springs were worn out, and the armrests had seen better days. The engineers stripped the seating right back, removed the old springs and replaced the bases with modern memory foam. It is the same material used in high quality mattresses, so you can imagine the difference it makes.

Passenger access was also improved, making it easier for people to move in and out of their seats. The final transformation came from specialist firm Grinsty Rail Interiors in Nottingham, which reupholstered everything to a high standard. The new seats look fantastic and feel even better. It is clear that the Wensleydale Railway cares deeply about the comfort of its passengers.

All Aboard The Polar Express

Guests will get their first chance to try the newly refurbished carriages during this year's POLAR EXPRESS train ride, with updated details released on 15 November 2025. This is not just any festive event. It is one of the biggest official POLAR EXPRESS experiences outside of the United States. Now in its sixth year, it has welcomed more than a quarter of a million passengers. It is also the longest running officially licensed Polar Express event in Yorkshire. With the upgraded carriages, this year's trips will be even more magical.

The People Behind The Project

A refurbishment like this takes passion and teamwork. Matt Jervis, Director at Wensleydale Railway PLC, praised the group of staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make it happen, saying they "worked miracles". The upgraded carriages will not only benefit the Christmas Polar Express trains but will also be used throughout the year.

He gave special credit to engineering and operations manager Rob Cooper Williamson, who led the project. Jervis highlighted the dedication of the volunteers and the quality of the work carried out by Grinsty Rail Interiors, saying the seats are "a vast improvement" and that customers will definitely notice the upgrade.

This project proves what can be achieved when people who love railway heritage come together to preserve it for the future.
