Located slap bang between London and Edinburgh, Boroughbridge is steeped in history including the Devil's Arrows which are reputed to be around 4,000 years old. With many inns, shops and cafes, Boroughbridge is a great way to soak up some of Yorkshire's hearty tradition.

Boroughbridge A delightful market town full of traditional charm

A Devil of a good place

Once a staging post for stagecoaches in the early 19th century, Boroughbridge now has a fabulous thriving High Street with independent and boutique shops from fashion to food, bridal to beauty.

There is a great collection of cafes to suit all tastes, restaurants and cosy pubs - there were no fewer than 22 inns in the town in bygone days!

Enjoy access onto the canal and beautiful tranquil walks along the banks of the River Ure - with its wide banks and steady flow it provides excellent navigation for boats and fishing. Nearby is the Staveley Nature Reserve where the superb wetland habitat offers regular sightings of birds, otters and several species of orchid.

The Devil's Arrows

Boroughbridge has on its border what was, according to 18th century proverb, a row of three large stones thrown by the Devil at neighbouring town Aldborough (he missed though so they ended up in Boroughbridge). The three stones are said to date back to the Bronze Age around 4,000 years ago! Well worth a visit to ask the age old question of ‘just how did they get here?'

The Roman influence

Within easy walking distance is the village of Aldborough. Situated on the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum and dating back to the late first century, remains include parts of the Roman defences and two spectacular mosaic pavements. There are also local Roman finds on display in the museum. The annual Aldborough & Boroughbridge Show is a great day out for all the family and The Northern Aldborough Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music events in the country are just two events to tempt you to this corner of Yorkshire.

Boroughbridge is a fantastic base for Knaresborough, Harrogate, Ripon, York and the Yorkshire Dales.
