Whether you're a student or a sports fan, a gourmet food lover or a real ale drinker, Headingley has a lot to offer. The nearby Beckett Park campus with its lively student population has really shaped the area, helping to keep the gorgeous little delis, delightful vintage shops and traditional cinema in business, not to mention the numerous pubs and local ale bars!

Stadiums, shopping and cinema

Headingley Carnegie Stadium is a must visit for sports fans. Home of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rhinos rugby league team and Leeds Carnegie rugby union team, you can spend a high-octane afternoon watching your sporting heroes in action.  Alternatively, if shopping's more your bag, spend a relaxing morning strolling around the quirky vintage shops, excellent value Oxfam Bookstore and interesting craft and art shops which run along the area's busy main street.

A gourmet's delight

  • For a relatively small suburb, Headingley has a wealth of gourmet restaurants and delightful delis to choose from;
  • If you love authentic Italian, Salvo's Salumeria shouldn't be missed. With Italian delicacies such as handmade pizzas and piadinas, and salami, cheese and vegetables imported weekly from Milan market, it's a delicious lunchtime indulgence.
  • Spend your lunch in Thailand with a visit to Jino's Thai Café. Informal, relaxed and mouthwateringly authentic, you can enjoy a feast of Thai dishes for a very reasonable price.
  • Spread across three floors, Trio offers something for everyone. Located on North Lane, Trio boasts a lively basement bar, ground floor restaurant with an eclectic menu and an upstairs cocktail bar.
  • If you're looking for picnic food or lunch on the go, pop into Pickles and Potter. This friendly local delicatessen offers the best freshly made gourmet sandwiches, gooey chocolate brownies and fresh soups in the area.
  • Serving everything from traditional fish & chips to seafood lasagne, Bryan's Fish & Seafood Restaurant has something for almost everyone. Trading since 1934, it has long been a Headingley favourite!

If you're looking for a bit of culture, The Bowery is a great little spot for Yorkshire's artistic community as well as a welcoming space to create and be inspired; come and learn a new skill in a creative workshop, take a look at the exhibition, or just relax with a coffee and cake.

Alternatively, for a nostalgic afternoon to remember, catch a film at the charming Cottage Road Cinema. Cottage Road is the oldest cinema in Leeds and one of the oldest cinemas in the UK, showing a mixture of new and classic films. Indulge in a large serving of fresh popcorn for just £3.50, but remember to bring cash - this old fashioned film house doesn't accept credit or debit cards!
