Nestled in a picturesque hollow on the head of the Esk Valley, Danby is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful landscape of the North York Moors. Don't forget to visit the pretty village green at the heart of Danby, where Scotch Blackface sheep keep the grass down all year round. No need for lawnmowers here!

Danby village The perfect base for exploring the beautiful North York Moors.

Welcome to Danby

Danby is well known as the home of The Moors National Park Centre, a former hunting lodge which is now surrounded by thirteen acres of gardens, complete with some charming signposted walks. Children will love exploring the fascinating nature and riverside trails, exploring the challenging climbing wall and letting off steam in the indoor play area.

Walks and picnics

Danby is the perfect place for a summer picnic and an energetic scramble. We recommend visiting the excellent bakery in the village centre to stock up on scrumptious sandwiches and home-baked cakes, and then exploring the magnificent scenery with a walk up to Danby Beacon. At 229 metres high, the beacon offers superb panoramic views - don't forget your camera! You can also pick up an excellent guide to short, circular walks in the area from The Moors Centre

History and agriculture

Just a short distance away from the village centre, you'll find the pretty Church of St Hilda - a historic building, incorporating Saxon, Norman, mediaeval and even Georgian architecture. Nestled at the heart of the dale, it's the perfect place to relax and take in some stunning scenery. Finally, if you're visiting in August, the Danby Agricultural Show is a must-visit, providing plenty of traditional entertainment ranging from sheepdog trials to local produce competitions.
