With a population of just 2,280, Kirkbymoorside feels more like a large village than a town - and with its pretty marketplace, toll house and ruined castle it's a charming place to visit. The name 'Kirkbymoorside' in fact means 'place with a church by the moor' and the church in question is All Saints, a late mediaeval building that's just as glorious inside as out.

Welcome to Kirkbymoorside

Situated between Thirsk and Scarborough, this pleasant town is a good base for exploring the North York Moors National Park and the surrounding area. Just three miles away, the sizeable Ryedale Folk Museum is located in Hutton-le-Hole, with its cluster of buildings giving an insight into the crafts and trades from past times. The small river of Dove-in-Farndale, a tributary of the Rye, is also perfect for trout fishing.

Claims to fame

This small settlement has quite a particular claim to fame, being the home of the celebrated Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band - one of the best in the country - originally formed around 200 years ago. You can experience the famous band live at the Ryedale show, North Yorkshire's biggest agricultural event, held in the summer at Welburn Park south of Kirkbymoorside.
