Flamborough

Marked by a stretch of rugged white cliffs surrounding a small village, Flamborough Head is an outdoor lover's paradise. The coastline is a great base for bird watching, hiking along windswept paths and sea canoeing around the bay - but only for the experienced outdoor pursuits enthusiast! With a scenic nature reserve and two ancient lighthouses nearby, this Special Area of Conservation is a haven for anyone looking to explore the Yorkshire Coast at its most wild and untamed.

Landmarks and lighthouses

Flamborough Head is an inspiring destination, with its historic landmarks and ancient lighthouses. The cliffs provide a focal point for the area, soaring up from the choppy sea and providing an ideal destination for both hikers and bird watchers.

Birds of a feather

Just a short distance away from Flamborough Head, Bempton Cliffs is a must visit for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast. The towering chalk cliffs are home to over 200,000 seabirds, including Gannets, Kittiwakes, Guillemots and Puffins. You can watch the birds from a number of official viewpoints, or explore the family-friendly visitor centre which is full of puffin memorabilia.

Explore the great outdoors

What Flamborough may be missing in ‘tourist attractions', it more than makes up for in gorgeous scenery and fresh sea air. Our top suggestions for anyone who loves the great outdoors include:

  • Spend a day on the long sandy beaches of either North or South Landing, kite-surfing, rock pooling and (carefully) exploring the sea caves. You might also be able to spot some colourful cobble boats - a reminder of Flamborough's fishing history.
  • Spend a night under the stars at Wold Farm campsite. Expect open fields, big skies and an uninterrupted view of both of Flamborough's lighthouses.
  • Visit the Danes Dyke nature reserve - just a few miles from Flamborough Head and characterised by its stunning array of wildlife.
  • Explore Rudson Monolith, an ancient hamlet between Sledmere and Bridlington, possibly dating back to the Neolithic times.
  • Take a trip to Flamborough's ancient octagonal lighthouse, dating from 1674, or explore the 1806 shingle lighthouse on the opposite side of the bay.
  • Hike along the North or South Landing, or from Bempton Cliffs to Flamborough Head, with panoramic views of the coastline.
  • If the weather's not on your side, explore Flamborough village and its small collection of pubs and of course some traditional fish and chip shops.
