Alpacas are smaller cousins of the Llama and kept for their luxurious soft fleece and curious, amiable nature. Young alpacas are called Cria and love nothing more to play and chase around with their friends. They are weaned at around 5 months old and form strong bonds within their herd. Once they have got over leaving mum and after a lot of 'humming', the endearing noise alpacas make for reassurance, we begin the work of halter training.Relucatant at first, and always with an alpaca friend, slow and gentle persuasion soon wins them over helped by their curious nature.Halter training is important for relaxed and easy handling of these semi wild animals. As prey animals they have a natural step away and flight response to control. There are two types of Alpaca, Huacaya and Suri with the diffence being in the fleece. Beacon Alpacas breed Huacaya for their wonderful soft and warm fleece, shearing once a year and processing into gorgeous yarns for the fashion and craft industries. We have alpacas for sale for breeding or as pets and field guards for chickens and lambs.Training in alpaca husbandry is given with the sale of any for our stock. For other alpaca breeders, stud services with herd sires carrying prize winning genetics are available in conjuction with Livanti Alpacas including livery for your dam. Over winter agisment is also available. All walks and experience days are available by prior booking. For more information give the owner Jacki a call or email.Alpacas are nosey so its more of a stroll as they like to look around. The walk last for between 1 and 1.5 hours along bridleways and quiet roads with stunning views over the vale of York and White horse at Kilburn.Drinks and comfort facilities are offered before and after your walk, and a sample of Alpaca Yarn and garments are available to buy.
