1 Your Account

Encouraging kids to be active when they are young establishes a routine that could stay with them thoughout their life. So there really are no excuses!

Finding active ways to occupy the kids can seem like a challenge for even the most imaginative parent. With this is mind, we've picked out some great ways to keep your family active in Yorkshire, whatever the weather.

Animal Fun

  • Pesky Husky Trekking -  With 30 sled dogs for you to meet, we provide a range of exciting experiences, including Husky Trekking and Husky Hiking. A fun and unique activity, this is perfect for families with children, or anyone who wants to meet and spend quality time with these amazing animals!
  • Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Doncaster - Yorkshire Wildlife Park is open daily from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. There is a programme of ranger talks and demonstrations throughout the day, including the spectacular flying display of Birds of Prey provided by Icarus Falconry (weekends and school summer holidays only). There are lots of animals to see including wallabies, antelope, zebra, camels and the most endangered carnivores in Africa, the Painted Hunting Dog. WATCH A VIDEO!
  • Beacon Alpacas offer walks and experience days with these delightful creatures - taking an alpaca for a walk gives you the opportunity get up close and learn more about the curious and friendly South American Camelid.
  • Filey Bird Garden & Animal Park - Meet and feed a variety of friendly animals in their spacious paddocks - from giant rabbits to woolly alpacas, spotty pigs and miniature ponies. Visit the Worm-world and Mini-beast Mansion, and if ou dare, dare to put your hands in the feely boxes.
  • The International Centre for Birds of Prey in Helmsley has the largest collection of birds of prey in the north of England. Housing birds from the tiny Burrowing Owl to the gigantic Steller's Sea Eagle, there is lots to see for all ages. The birds are flown three times a day. This is a great time to take photographs. Situated next to the historic Duncombe Park house the site covers about 10 acres.
  • Encounter the exotic and experience a wild family day out at Tropical Butterfly House! Get close to free-flying butterflies and birds, as well as friendly, free-roaming farm animals. Meet the residents of Meerkat Mansion and Prairie Dog Camp, along with snakes, birds of prey and creepy crawlies in unforgettable Animal Encounters daily.
  • Flamingo Land Theme Park & Zoo - Discover the UK's only combined theme park, zoo and holiday resort. If you are looking for adrenaline-fuelled thrills, there is a sensational collection of extreme rides, including the recently opened Hero Rollercoaster that puts visitors in a flying position before swooping them around a track, and creating the sensation of zero gravity flight..
  • The York Bird of Prey Centre is based in the walled garden at Burn Hall Huby. The Centre is home to over 70 birds and holds 2 flying displays every day. In addition there will be opportunities to meet and handle the birds throughout the day.

  • Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre - Standedge Tunnel is the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK, stretching for over 3 miles.
  • Learn and Experience Summer Camps - We offer truly unique experiences for children, 8-14 years old, with a diverse range of courses and programmes. At Learn & Experience children learn new skills, encounter different experiences and "grow as individuals" during their time with us.
  • Sci-Tek at Magna in Rotherham has been specially designed to let children of all ages play, explore and learn. Some parents won’t be able to stop themselves from having a go!
  • Studfold Explore, Discover and Learn Trail The trail has been designed with primary school aged children in mind. It encourages children to be aware of their natural surroundings in an innovative and exciting way.
  • The Original Robin Hoods Bay Ghost Walks Take a Unique Tour through Streets and Alleyways as you listen to Tales of the Strange and Supernatural set against a background of Smugglers, Sailors and Shipwrecks, Folklore and Legend.

Get active

The Works Skatepark Charity, Leeds, West Yorkshire covers 25,000 square foot and boasts professional and bespoke ramps.The skatepark is used for BMXing, Skateboarding, Rollerblading and Scooter Riding. They have complete beginners to pro riders using the park on a daily bases.They work closely with schools, youth groups and extended services where they aim to help get children back into exercise whilst having fun through learning or improving with different non-traditional sports. The skatepark often plays host to events, demos and film premiers starring the biggest names in BMX, skateboarding, inline skating and scooter riding.  

The Summer Adventure at Stockeld Park, Wetherby. Join Stockeld Park for magical adventures for the whole family this summer. There's a roller rink, a maze and lots of indoor play and outdoor fresh air fun within the beautiful surroundings of the Stockeld Park estate!

Another World Adventure Centre, Halifax - An exciting outdoor activity centre based in Halifax, West Yorkshire, offering a wide range of exciting activities suitable for all ages, groups and individuals.

Mother Shipton's Cave - The magical parkland was once home to Mother Shipton, but now welcomes children of all ages to explore the history and adventure of this beautiful setting. The park itself is just under a mile long, with 2 adventure playgrounds situated near the entrance, and in the heart of the park, perfect for energetic little ones! The free kid's trail is designed to tailor the unique geology and heritage of the park for children, and a free chocolate bar is an added incentive to keep their eyes and ears open throughout the walk.
