|The Yor Community Wellbeing Hub in Acomb Garth is stepping up its efforts to support mental health by extending its opening hours and introducing new activities. Starting from July 17, 2026, the hub will be open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, making it easier for people to access the help they need when they need it.
Extended Opening Hours
The recent changes mean that visitors can now drop in or make appointments at more convenient times. Here’s the new schedule:
- Monday: 8am-8pm (drop-in)
- Tuesday: 8am-8pm (appointments only)
- Wednesday: 8am-8pm (drop-in)
- Thursday: 8am-8pm (appointments only)
- Friday: 8am-8pm (drop-in)
- Saturday: 8am-5pm (drop-in), 5pm-8pm (appointments only)
- Sunday: Closed
The hub is working towards its goal of being open 24 hours a day, which would provide even greater access to mental health support for the community.
New Activities and Support Groups
Along with the extended hours, the hub has introduced four exciting new drop-in groups to help people connect and improve their wellbeing:
- Greenshoots Gardening Group: This group meets every Friday from 1-3pm. Participants can help with gardening tasks, whether they are seasoned gardeners or beginners. It’s a chance to learn new skills while enjoying the outdoors. Donations of gardening tools, plants, and pots are also welcome.
- Walking Group: Held fortnightly on Thursdays from 1-2pm, this group offers a relaxed environment for people to enjoy a gentle walk, often exploring local parks like West Bank Park.
- Weekly Quiz: Every Friday evening from 6-7pm, this fun quiz night is perfect for those looking to test their general knowledge in a friendly setting.
- Activities Session: Every Wednesday from 11am-1pm, participants can take part in various fun activities aimed at boosting wellness.
Community Feedback and Support
The improvements at the Yor Community Wellbeing Hub have been developed with input from local residents and partners. Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw, the Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care at City of York Council, stated, “This hub, co-produced with partners and residents with lived experience, is helping deliver accessible, practical advice and activities to support people’s wellbeing.”
She emphasised that the extended hours and new informal groups will positively impact those who visit the hub, making it an even more valuable resource for the community. The York Mental Health Partnership, co-chaired by Professor Lynne Gabriel OBE and Dr Steve Wright, also highlighted the importance of creating welcoming spaces for people to improve and maintain their mental health.
