|A beloved British film is making its way back to cinemas across the UK to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Beautiful Thing, directed by Hettie Macdonald, will return to screens from 1st September to 31st October 2026, thanks to a nationwide campaign led by Reclaim The Frame, in partnership with the BFI Film Audience Network and Film4. This campaign aims to honour one of the most cherished films of the 1990s, allowing both new viewers and long-time fans to experience the magic of this touching story once again.
About Beautiful Thing
Beautiful Thing is a heart-warming tale of first love that follows two teenage boys, Jamie and Ste, who live in a council estate in South East London. As they navigate the complexities of adolescence and their blossoming relationship, they are supported by Jamie's spirited mother, Sandra, and their quirky neighbour, Leah. The film is based on a play written by Jonathan Harvey, who also adapted it for the screen, ensuring that the charm and authenticity of the original story remain intact.
Originally released in June 1996, Beautiful Thing quickly became a landmark of British queer cinema, winning the Best Film Award at the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival and screening at prestigious events like the Cannes Film Festival. The film’s depiction of love, friendship, and community has resonated with audiences for three decades, making it a timeless classic.

“What I love about Beautiful Thing is that it sees beauty everywhere. It takes an ordinary housing estate and fills it with colour, warmth and life.”
She emphasised that the film is not only a love story but also a celebration of community, allowing each character to shine in their own way.
Ann Griffiths, Senior Manager of National Lottery Audiences Partnerships at the BFI, added:
“It's great to see BFI National Lottery good cause funding being used to bring this iconic and important film back to audiences all across the UK.”
She noted that the film captures the essence of youth identity and the journey of self-discovery, making it a perfect fit for the Rip It Up season.
Technical Details and Availability
For the first time, Beautiful Thing will be available in UK cinemas on Digital Cinema Package (DCP), a modern format that ensures high-quality viewing. Additionally, some venues will be screening the original 35mm print, which has not been seen in cinemas for approximately 15 years. This presents a rare opportunity for audiences to experience the film in its original format, enhancing the nostalgia for those who remember it from its initial release.
As the campaign unfolds, more venues and screening dates will be announced, making it easier for fans across the country to join in the celebration. This revival aims to introduce Beautiful Thing to a new generation while allowing long-time fans to revisit the film that has touched so many hearts.
