|Exciting news is on the horizon for Castleford as plans to build 69 affordable homes on the site of the former Castleford Swimming Baths are set to move forward. This initiative, supported by Wakefield Council and Vico Homes, aims to provide local residents with much-needed housing options for rent and shared ownership.
Affordable Homes Coming to Castleford
The project is made possible through a blend of funding sources, including developer contributions known as Section 106 funding. This type of funding is generated from agreements made during the planning process, ensuring that developers contribute to local community needs. Importantly, this means that the money used for the new homes has not come from local taxpayers or council reserves, making it a cost-effective solution for the community.
Andrew Wakefield, the Cabinet Member for Strategic, Housing, Skills & Business Growth at Wakefield Council, expressed enthusiasm for the development:
“It’s great to see this former Council site being transformed to provide affordable homes for local people. We'll continue to work closely with our partners and monitor the scheme so that these much-needed homes are available as soon as possible.”
Demolition Work and Site Preparation
Demolition work is anticipated to begin in September 2026, with machinery already arriving at the site to kick off preparations. This phase will clear the old swimming baths, making way for new construction. The timeline for the completion of the homes is set for the summer of 2028, offering a hopeful outlook for families and individuals seeking affordable housing in Castleford.
James Kilroy, Head of New Business and Delivery at Vico Homes, highlighted the significance of this project:
