From Saturday 19th September to Sunday 4th October 2026, significant engineering improvement works will be taking place along the railway line connecting Stalybridge, Huddersfield, and Mirfield. This project is part of the ambitious Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), aimed at enhancing the railway infrastructure for better services in the future.

What Is Being Upgraded?

During this period, Network Rail will focus on several key improvements:

  • Track Renewal and Drainage Upgrades: The existing track will be renewed, and the drainage system in the Gledholt tunnel, located to the west of Huddersfield, will be upgraded. This will help prevent water from causing problems, ensuring trains can run reliably.

  • New Lines of Track: Two new lines will be added in the Deighton area. This will allow faster trains to pass slower, stopping services, leading to quicker journeys for passengers.

  • Historic Roof Restoration: Work will continue on restoring the historic roof at Huddersfield station. This is important for preserving the station's heritage while also providing better shelter for travellers.

  • Signalling and Overhead Line Equipment Upgrades: The signalling system will be improved and new overhead line equipment will be installed. These upgrades are essential for preparing the railway for greener, quieter, and faster electric trains in the future.

Travel Changes During the Works

Although train services will continue throughout the engineering works, passengers should be prepared for some changes to their journeys. Here’s what to expect:

  • Some routes will be diverted via Brighouse.

  • Specific services may start or finish at different stations.

  • Rail replacement buses will operate on key routes, offering alternative transport options.

  • Some journeys might take longer than usual, so it's advisable to allow extra time for travel.

  • Timetables and calling patterns will be adjusted for several routes.

Passengers are encouraged to check their journeys before travelling and to be aware of potential delays.

Specific Changes for TransPennine Express Services

On the weekends of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September, as well as Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October, TransPennine Express will implement the following travel changes:

  • Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle: This service will be diverted between Manchester Victoria and Dewsbury, making additional stops at Lea Green and Brighouse.

  • Liverpool Lime Street to Hull: This route will only operate between Leeds and Hull.

  • Manchester Airport to Redcar Central: Trains will be diverted between Manchester Victoria and Dewsbury.

    • On Saturday, this service will run from Manchester Victoria to Redcar Central, with extra stops at Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Bridge, and Brighouse.

    • On Sunday, the service will run from Manchester Victoria until 12:00 and then from Manchester Airport to Redcar Central, also calling at Brighouse.

  • Manchester Victoria to Scarborough: This service will be diverted between Manchester Victoria and Dewsbury, with additional stops at Brighouse and Castleton on Saturdays.

  • Manchester Piccadilly to York via Castleford: A split service will operate, with one part running from Manchester Airport to Stalybridge and the other from Wakefield Kirkgate to York.

Replacement Bus Services

To assist passengers during the engineering works, several replacement bus services will be in operation:

  • Stalybridge to Huddersfield: A direct bus service will be available.

  • Stalybridge to Huddersfield: This will also stop at Mossley, Greenfield, Marsden, and Slaithwaite.

  • Huddersfield to Brighouse: A direct bus service will run.

  • Huddersfield to Lockwood: A direct bus service will also be available.

Additional Services and Notes

From Monday 21st September to Friday 2nd October, similar travel changes will be in effect. Passengers should be particularly aware of these adjustments:

  • Manchester Piccadilly to Leeds: Additional services during AM and PM peak times will not run on weekends.

  • Replacement buses will also operate on various routes, including from Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield and from Manchester Airport to Brighouse.

It's important to note that the services between Marsden and Brighouse, as well as Stalybridge and Huddersfield, will only stop at the Peel Street bus stops on A62 Manchester Road.

As these enhancements are made, they promise to improve the railway experience for everyone travelling in and around Yorkshire. Passengers are reminded to stay informed and plan ahead to ensure a smooth journey during this period of necessary upgrades.
