Great place to stay. Fantastic herring salad and schnitzel dishes. Lovely German theme to the food and excellent German beers. Wolfgang, our host was great fun. We watched England lose to Argentina that evening with him. He was cheering for England. Can't ask for more.
Wolfgang and Helen run a great business. We really appreciated the communication (phone and email) before our stay, as well as the lifts to/from Clay Bank Top. The inn itself is quaint and homey; our rooms felt like we were staying at a grandparents’ house, which is exactly what we needed after a long day of walking. The food was good, German beer was excellent, and we felt very well taken care of. Wolfgang has an extensive knowledge of the walking in the area, and was a great resource. Great stay, definitely recommend if you’re walking Coast to Coast or the Cleveland Way! We’ll be back next time we visit.
Came here today whilst on a walk in the area with friends. I feel like the main chef wasn’t cooking or something as the food was completely different to expectations from photos we’d seen. The waiting staff were generally quite disinterested from the start. Kicked off with a nice warm glass of Pepsi max (no ice offered). Initially the wrong food was brought out, which is fine, an honest mistake. I mentioned this and he sort of just laughed. I then asked if I could have the beef bratwurst I’d initially ordered and he said they couldn’t serve it with potato pancakes as advertised but could serve it with mash. I asked if the mash used cream as i am unable to eat cream, he didn’t know, went in, came back later and said I could have the pancakes. The food came out and instead I was given two very dry, clearly frozen, cardboard-like chicken burger patties that I hadn’t ordered. And definitely didn’t want. They were awful. There was also a long black hair in my friend’s food. Very disappointing. Side note: How could they not have potato pancakes if they were able to serve mash? Or is everything bought in??
Enjoyed our stay for one night as part of our Cleveland Way walk. Friendly and helpful staff. Wolfgang picked us up and dropped us off at Clay Bank which was a fantastic service for us walkers. Food was excellent and filling. Packed lunches were available and were delicious. Thank you.
The best steak I have had in my life. Genuinely. Perfectly cooked, juicy, full of flavour. Can tell it’s really good quality cut of meat. Delicious. 10/10 from me 😁. Chips absolutely lovely proper home made chips. Lovely atmosphere. Defiantly be back in the future & I recommend anyone to give this place a try, a little gem in the country side💎
