|Yorkshire is gearing up for an exciting celebration of its rich history and culture as part of the annual Heritage Open Days festival. From 11 to 20 September 2026, English Heritage will open the doors to various historic sites across the region, allowing visitors to explore and learn about the stories that have shaped local communities – all for free!
Festival Highlights
This year’s theme, "Everyday Histories," focuses on the personal stories and events that have influenced the lives of people in Yorkshire. Visitors can look forward to a wide range of activities, including guided tours, historical talks, and even some engaging re-enactments. Here are some of the key events taking place:
Conisbrough Castle Open Days (South Yorkshire)
Conisbrough Castle, an impressive site with over 800 years of history, will be hosting two special open days. Visitors can experience thrilling historical re-enactments featuring Vikings and medieval knights, complete with battles and displays of combat. This is a fantastic opportunity for families to enjoy some history while having fun!
12 September, 11am-4pm: Viking Open Day - A chance to meet Vikings and learn about their way of life.
19 September, 11am-4pm: Medieval Knights at the Castle - Witness knights in action and hear their stories.
Aldborough Roman Open Day (North Yorkshire)
On 20 September, the site of the ancient Roman town of Aldborough will be open to the public. Organised by The Friends of Roman Aldborough, this day will allow visitors to explore the Roman Town site and its museum, including the nearby Roman Garden. Attendees will also have the chance to see archaeological excavations in progress, conducted by the University of Cambridge.
20 September, 10:30am-4pm: Explore the Roman heritage of Yorkshire and learn about life in ancient times.
Byland Abbey Tours & Talks (North Yorkshire)
Once a grand monastery, Byland Abbey will be offering a series of special tours and talks throughout the festival. Led by knowledgeable volunteers, these sessions will delve into the history of the abbey and its impact on the region. No pre-booking is required, making it easy for everyone to join in.
18 September, 1pm: Misbehaving Monks: Crimes and Punishments for Cistercians - Discover the intriguing tales of abbey life.
19 September:
11am: Byland Abbey: Would You Know It?!
2pm: Ora et Labora: The Lives of Lay Brothers and Choir Monks.
20 September:
11am: What Have Monks Ever Done for Us?
2pm: Dissolution of the Monasteries Walking Tour - A fascinating look at the changes that affected the abbey.
Easby Abbey Guided Tour (North Yorkshire)
On 26 September, visitors can join a guided tour of Easby Abbey, where English Heritage will highlight the abbey’s significance to the local community. It was not only a place of worship but also a key employer and provider of care in the area. This tour will explore the abbey's role in shaping local history.
26 September, 11am: For God and the Commons: Easby Abbey and the People of Richmondshire.
