A vibrant and inspiring exhibition titled The Magic Show has taken over the Gallery at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, Leeds, showcasing the creativity of disabled, neurodivergent, and learning-disabled artists. This joyful exhibition, which runs until 27th September 2026, brings together imaginative works that celebrate the theme of magic through various art forms, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics.

Collaboration and Creativity

The exhibition is the result of a unique partnership between Sunny Bank Mills, Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre, and Pyramid. Over the course of six months, artists from these organisations participated in collaborative workshops, studio visits, and creative exchanges to explore the theme of magic. This process not only helped artists share their skills but also fostered friendships and mutual learning.

Alice Clayden, the Creative Programme Coordinator at Pyramid, expressed excitement about the project:

“Our member artists have fully embraced and explored the magic-inspired theme of this exhibition, creating unique and imaginative works that we hope will inspire, surprise and engage visitors.”

The exhibition highlights the importance of providing meaningful platforms for artists with learning disabilities and autism, ensuring their talents are showcased in respected institutions.

A Shift in Perspectives

According to Anna Turzynski, Arts Director at Sunny Bank Mills, the exhibition represents a significant cultural shift.

“The Magic Show started as a small, speculative invitation to two groups of artists and has grown into a giant cultural shift here at Sunny Bank Mills.”

“I am so excited for audiences to experience the Gallery reimagined by artists from Henshaws and Pyramid.”

This initiative not only celebrates the artists’ creativity but also challenges traditional perceptions of disability in the arts.

The exhibition features a range of artworks that transform everyday materials into extraordinary pieces, inviting visitors to see the world through a different lens. One standout project is Heather’s crochet granny square blanket, which is made up of over 300 handmade squares contributed by creators from across the UK and beyond. This project exemplifies how creativity can unite people and foster community spirit.

Workshops and Performances

In addition to the exhibition, The Magic Show will host creative workshops and performances from both Henshaws and Pyramid throughout its three-month run. These activities provide further opportunities for engagement and allow visitors to participate in the creative process alongside the artists.

Free Entry and Community Hub

Visitors are encouraged to explore this magical exhibition at the Gallery, Sandsgate Building, Sunny Bank Mills, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm, and is free to enter. The venue itself is a cultural hub in the heart of Farsley, known for its contemporary art gallery, large artist studio community, and a textile museum and archive. It serves as a space for creativity and collaboration, making it a significant asset to the Yorkshire region.

The partnership between Henshaws, Pyramid, and Sunny Bank Mills marks a notable step forward in promoting inclusivity in the arts.

As Sharon Hockin, Workshop Leader at Henshaws, remarked:

“Working alongside another local disability arts organisation in a major contemporary art gallery has been fantastic.”

This collaboration has provided over 40 art makers with the opportunity to create and showcase their work, reinforcing the message that art is for everyone.

Celebrating Capability

For the artists involved, The Magic Show is more than just an exhibition; it is a chance to challenge stereotypes and demonstrate their capabilities.

Debra, an artist from Henshaws, shared her enthusiasm:

“This is the best exhibition EVER. The collaboration has been a fantastic way to connect with other artists, and the exhibition will show what we can do. This show is about capability, not disability.”

The exhibition invites all visitors to engage with the art and the artists, fostering a sense of community and understanding. By celebrating the extraordinary talent of these artists, The Magic Show aims to inspire everyone to embrace creativity and see the magic in their own lives.
