|On Saturday, 11th July, Ghyll Royd Care Home in Guiseley kicked off the summer festivities with its much-anticipated Secret Garden Country Fete. This event marks the beginning of a vibrant summer season for Spellman Care, attracting a fantastic turnout of residents, family members, staff, and local community members. The atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter, setting a positive tone for future celebrations.
Ghyll Royd Fete Highlights
Steven Spellman, the director of Spellman Care, expressed his delight at the event's success:
“It was wonderful to see Ghyll Royd’s garden so full of life, laughter and community spirit. Our residents, their relatives and our dedicated colleagues put so much love and effort into creating a meaningful event, and the response was fantastic.”
The Secret Garden Country Fete was designed as a relaxing and sensory experience, particularly for those living with dementia. Guests enjoyed a variety of activities, including:

Live entertainment featuring pianist Kevin James and singer Craig Carlisle
Adding to the day's significance, the Lord Mayor attended and delivered a heartfelt speech about the importance of community events for both individuals living with dementia and the wider community. Craig Carlisle noted that it was the "busiest fete he had attended yet," which speaks volumes about the event's success and the vibrant atmosphere that day.

The charity raffle held during the fete was another highlight, with generous contributions from local businesses. Prizes included:

Upcoming Summer Celebrations
Following the success of Ghyll Royd’s fete, the summer festivities will continue with several exciting events planned. The next event is the Funk Summer Fete at Craven Nursing Home on Saturday, 25th July, from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. This family-friendly event will feature:

A community barbecue
A selection of stalls
All proceeds from this event will support the Craven residents’ fund, which helps to provide future activities and outings for the residents. Additionally, the home is inviting owners of classic 1960s cars to display their vehicles, adding to the retro theme of the day.
As August approaches, the festivities will move to Springbank Care Home in Silsden, which will host a “Dancing Through the Decades” event on Friday, 21st August, from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. This celebration will recreate the charm of a classic British dance hall, complete with live music from Megan Isabella and delicious treats for all attendees.
Finally, the summer season will conclude with an enchanting Alice in Wonderland Summer Fete at Steeton Court Nursing Home on Saturday, 12th September, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. This whimsical event invites guests to dress up as their favourite characters from the story and enjoy a magical afternoon filled with games, independent stalls, and themed surprises.
Community Involvement
Spellman Care is actively seeking support from local businesses and individuals to contribute raffle prizes for the upcoming fetes. The funds raised will go towards projects that enhance the lives of residents, like the “Moments That Matter” initiative at Springbank Care Home, which focuses on personalised activities and outings.
With plenty of opportunities to get involved, local businesses can also book stalls for the remaining summer events. Each care home encourages anyone interested in participating or learning more about the events to reach out directly. The staff and residents are eager to create more memorable afternoons filled with fun, laughter, and community spirit.
