|York is set to see overnight roadworks as part of the ongoing Highway Maintenance Programme, with resurfacing works scheduled for the Haxby Roundabout and the A1237 starting on 21 September 2026. These essential improvements aim to enhance road safety and provide smoother journeys for all users.
Details of the Project
The resurfacing works will take place overnight, beginning at 8pm on Monday, 21 September and are expected to last for up to five nights, finishing by 6am on Saturday, 26 September. The work will specifically cover the section of the Outer Ring Road leading to the Haxby Road roundabout, as well as the roundabout itself and parts of Haxby Road.
To ensure the safety of both workers and road users, a night-time road closure will be implemented. This means that from 8pm to 6am each night, the A1237 will be closed in both directions between the Wigginton Road roundabout and the Strensall Road roundabout. However, connecting roads off the Strensall and Wigginton roundabouts will remain open, allowing access to local areas.
Traffic Management and Diversions
During the closure, a signed diversion will guide motorists and cyclists. The diversion route will utilise:
Malton Road
Heworth Green
Lord Mayors Walk
Gillygate
Bootham/A19
The A1237
This diversion is designed to accommodate the large vehicles that typically use the A1237. Additionally, local diversions will be put in place to assist residents of New Earswick and properties along Haxby Road, using Wigginton Road as an alternative route.
Impact on Cyclists and Pedestrians
For cyclists and pedestrians, the off-road cycle route between Wigginton Road and Haxby Road will remain open throughout the works. A separate cycle diversion will connect this route to Haxby Road, Hawthorn Terrace, Link Road, Huntington Road, and Strensall Road, ensuring that those on two wheels can navigate safely around the construction area.
Community Communication
To keep local residents and businesses informed, letters have been sent out detailing the planned works and diversion routes. This information has also been shared with networks used by businesses, particularly those at Clifton Moor, to help them prepare for the changes ahead of time.
City Council's Approach
Cllr Kate Ravilious, the Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, highlighted the importance of such projects:
“Haxby roundabout is the latest in a long list of works that have been completed this year, from pothole repair on residential side streets to resurfacing of major roads. We do know that these projects can be disruptive so in many cases, like this one, we are working overnight, reopening the road each morning, to reduce the impact on local residents and businesses.”
Considerations for Road Users
Drivers are reminded to adhere to the safety and traffic management rules in place during the work to ensure the safety of local residents and contractors. Emergency services will have access through the works at all times, and site staff will be available to assist residents and businesses with any access restrictions during the construction period.
Bus services will continue to operate normally, and waste and recycling collections will not be affected by the overnight works. However, any street parking within the working area will be suspended during the night, with arrangements made for specific access needs by speaking to site traffic management operatives.
