|A new campaign has been launched by Wakefield Council to help acquire a rare Roman silver-gilt brooch that was discovered near Hemsworth. This beautiful piece of history is being sought to enhance the collection at Wakefield Museums and Castles, allowing the community to connect with its own past.
Rare Find Near Hemsworth
The brooch, dating back to around AD 75–175, is a striking example of Roman craftsmanship. It stands out not only for its intricate design but also because it is made from silver-gilt, a material that was less common for this type of brooch, which is usually crafted from copper alloy. This makes the find particularly special, as there is limited archaeological evidence from the Roman period in the Hemsworth area.
Crowdfunding Efforts
To help bring this remarkable object into the public collection, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched. The campaign aims to raise the remaining £2,000 needed for the purchase. This effort is bolstered by a generous contribution of £2,000 from the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, highlighting the significance of the brooch and its potential impact on local heritage.
Community Involvement
Lukasz Borcz, the Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport at Wakefield Council, emphasised the importance of community involvement in this project
"This project is about giving local people the opportunity to be part of an important moment in Hemsworth's heritage. By bringing this rare find into our collection, we can learn more about our local history, share that story with future generations and celebrate an important part of the district's past."
The council believes that acquiring the brooch will not only enhance the museum's collection but also provide opportunities for learning and community engagement. It is hoped that the excitement generated by the campaign will inspire local residents to support the effort and take part in the ongoing exploration of their heritage.
Future Plans for the Brooch
If the campaign is successful and the brooch is acquired, Wakefield Council plans to display it in Hemsworth Library, which is conveniently located near the site of its discovery. This will allow visitors to appreciate the brooch in its local context. Additionally, the council intends to share the brooch with a wider audience through exhibitions, educational activities, and digital resources, ensuring that more people can learn about this fascinating piece of history.
