A team of ten from Boots Opticians' North-West division has accomplished an impressive feat by raising £4,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support through their participation in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. This challenge is well-known for its demanding nature, as it requires climbers to conquer three significant peaks in a single day.

The Challenge

On a bright morning, the team set off at 7:30 AM, ready to tackle the iconic peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. The total elevation gain of the hike was a staggering 5,200 feet, which is about 1,585 metres. The group managed to complete this ambitious hike in just 11 hours, despite facing a heatwave and challenging terrain.

Many of the participants were first-time hikers, and they quickly realised that they had taken on a serious challenge. The steep inclines and rough paths tested their endurance, but their determination to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support kept them motivated throughout the day.

Why It Matters

Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity that has been helping people affected by cancer for over 100 years. From the moment someone receives a cancer diagnosis, Macmillan provides essential information, support, and guidance to help individuals live their lives to the fullest. This mission resonates deeply with the Boots Opticians team, many of whom have had loved ones impacted by cancer.

Stewart Nicol, the regional manager for Boots Opticians in the North-West, expressed his pride in the team's achievement:

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have raised £4,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support – a charity that is incredibly important and close to all our hearts."

“I’d like to thank Naomi Foulkes for organising the day and to the rest of the team for their unrelenting effort in completing the walk despite some intense heat and tough terrain!”

The Community's Support

The success of this fundraising effort was also down to the generosity of the local community. Nicol noted:

“Lastly, a huge thank you to the north-west community who were more than happy to put their hands in their pockets to support a great cause, completely surpassing our original expectations for this fundraiser!"

This shows the strong sense of community in the region, where people come together to support important causes.

Boots Opticians and Macmillan

Boots Opticians has a long-standing partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, having trained over 900 clinicians to help with the eye and skin side effects that can result from cancer treatment. This training allows the team to provide valuable support to patients, ensuring that their healthcare needs are met during a challenging time. Boots Macmillan Opticians Professionals are specially trained to check for signs of eye cancer during routine eye tests and to look for broader signs of skin cancer on the face and head.

This collaboration highlights the importance of healthcare professionals being equipped to support those affected by cancer, making a real difference in their patients' lives.

Looking Ahead

The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge not only tested the physical limits of the Boots Opticians team but also showcased their commitment to giving back to the community. As they celebrate this significant achievement, they also inspire others to consider how they can contribute to charitable causes.

With more fundraising events likely on the horizon, the Boots Opticians team is set to continue its support for Macmillan Cancer Support and other important initiatives.
