•Exciting news is coming from Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre, which has just announced a fantastic line-up of three new shows for 2027. The theatre, known for its vibrant performances and engaging productions, is set to host a variety of entertaining acts that promise to delight audiences of all ages.
Stand-Up Comedy with Seann Walsh
First up is the renowned stand-up comedian Seann Walsh, who will take the stage on 14 April 2027 with his new show titled This is Torture. Following a hugely successful tour in 2023, Walsh is ready to bring his high-energy comedy back to the theatre.
Known for his quick wit and relatable observations, audiences can expect to laugh until they cry. The title of his show reflects his humorous take on everyday struggles, making it a must-see for comedy lovers.
A Ghostly Tale: The Turn of the Screw
From 5 to 8 May, the theatre will feature a chilling adaptation of The Turn of the Screw, a classic ghost story by Henry James. This production is brought to life by Blackeyed Theatre, who have previously enchanted theatre-goers with adaptations of stories like Frankenstein and Dracula. This version, created in collaboration with Arcola Theatre, tells the story of a young governess who cares for two seemingly perfect children in a remote English country house. However, strange occurrences hint at a darker presence lurking nearby.
The adaptation is penned by Olivier Award-winning playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm, promising a blend of powerful performances and theatrical flair. Fans of suspense and supernatural tales will not want to miss this captivating production.
Horrible Histories: Horrible Henrys
On 12 June, the theatre will host a lively and educational show from the award-winning Horrible Histories team, titled Horrible Henrys. This production takes a humorous look at the lives of British monarchs named Henry, revealing the often bizarre and gruesome events of their reigns. Audience members will learn about the curious fate of Henry VI, who was bludgeoned to death, and the peculiar habits of other Henrys, including Henry II, who once ate a mattress!
The show promises to be both entertaining and informative, making history accessible and fun for children and adults alike. With questions like, “Why did Henry IV insist his knights take a bath?” and “What made Henry V burn a tailor alive?”, this performance is sure to spark laughter and curiosity.
