Hungry Horse, a popular pub chain, has joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Support to introduce a brand new Rice Bowl on its Autumn/Winter menu. This exciting collaboration aims to provide customers with a greater variety of meal options, particularly catering to those with specific dietary needs, such as individuals undergoing cancer treatment. The Rice Bowl has been thoughtfully developed by Greene King’s nutrition team in partnership with Macmillan’s clinical dietitian and nutrition expert, ensuring that the ingredients are suitable for those who may face challenges when eating out.
New Rice Bowl Dish
The new Rice Bowl is a delicious combination of basmati rice, char-grilled peppers and onions, a sweet chilli slaw, and refreshing cucumber. Customers can choose from three appetising toppings: roast chicken breast, grilled salmon fillet, or halloumi strips. This dish not only aims to please the taste buds but also addresses the nutritional needs of those receiving cancer treatment.
Nutritious but also enjoyable
For many individuals living with cancer, dining out can become a daunting experience. Treatment can lead to changes in appetite, taste preferences, and overall nutritional requirements, making it difficult for them to find suitable meals. By collaborating with Macmillan’s experts, Hungry Horse has created a menu option that is not only nutritious but also enjoyable for a wider audience.
Oliver Jones, Food Development Manager for Hungry Horse, highlighted the importance of creating inclusive dining experiences:
“Eating out is an important way for people to spend time with family and friends, but we know that for some people receiving cancer treatment this can be challenging. Working with June and drawing on her clinical and nutrition expertise, we’ve been able to create a dish that takes those challenges into account, while remaining a delicious option that any customer can enjoy.”
Support for Macmillan Cancer Support
Each Rice Bowl sold will contribute to a good cause, as 30p from every meal will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. This initiative is part of a broader commitment, with the Rice Bowl being one of eight dishes on the Hungry Horse menu that support the charity. This partnership highlights the brand's dedication to helping those affected by cancer, making dining out a more accessible and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Louise, a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2022, shared her thoughts on the importance of having nutritious options available when dining out:
“Eating when going through chemotherapy can be tough with all the changes to your taste, appetite and energy. Having something wholesome, healthy and nutritious on the menu meant eating out on my good days was something to look forward to, as well as giving my husband a break from preparing meals.”
